Draperies are like the eyelids of a home. Close them for privacy and protection. Open them and the world beckons. Have a house fire and they’re a mess! Despite the occasional vacuuming, draperies tend to collect every speck of airborne dust, cooking oil, cigarette smoke particulate,pet dander … and more .

Combine these with the soot and smoke of a dwelling fire and the result is ugly. According to IFI, draperies having a "blackout" or insulating coating applied to the back of the fabric may exhibit peeling or blistering of that coating. Sometimes this is due to sun damage and the damage may be exacerbated by heat and smoke from a fire. Normal life expectancy of this type of drapery is three to four years (without fire-caused damage). Not all draperies can be salvaged. The restoration success depends on the drapery fabric, the extent of fire or water damage and/or the sun damage. The restoration dry cleaner will evaluate the drapery damage at the site, consulting with the field claims adjuster and the affected homeowner. If the drapes are wet but appear to be in good shape, the restoration dry cleaner may remove and dry the drapes before attempting to clean them.
